It's a celebration of the fact that our planet has made another complete and successful revolution around the Sun. That is a good reason to be happy.

I'll excuse you because you Dutch n33bs are probably completely disconnected from modern culture but black metal and emo are on completely opposite sides of the spectrum of which you are referring to. Celebrating a new year is just used by simple minded fools as an excuse to get drunk and has no tangible significance.
