The background is dudes raising a flag if you win. It's dead dudes in a field if you lose.

Otherwise, I completely agree with your point if we're ignoring the background.

I think it would make good sense that people signed up somehow before playing games since u could basically trick a bunch of spanish GR players into playing u and gain like 200 points in one night. Signing up first u'd make sure something like that wouldn't happen.
