Do you mean blank civ titles?
If so then you just name the civ with a space character when you make it, then open your civ folder, right click the civ, select Rename and name it whatever you want it to be so that you know which civ it is. It will show up in your game's list of civs with the new name but appear to players in game as a blank.

I was just reading over this and I should've mentioned it before...

If you do decide to make a civ with a blank name, there's really not a quick way to tell if your civilization has loaded yet and others do not know that it has loaded (could be a good thing in some cases). You have to hit the crown at the top or look at the bottom for a cost reduction for units/buildings. With a civ name, you can see it clearly in the unit box when you select any of your units or buildings -- something you're constantly doing at the start of a game.

In laggy games, you might run the risk of screwing up your build order if say, you have building cost reduction in your civ, and you make a building before the civ has loaded and you get left short on wood.

Giving all of your civs the same name, not necessarily a blank one, is an easy alternative. Your opponents still will not be able to guess what unit(s) you're making by learning your civ names and you won't screw yourself over when it's laggy.

As for your other "point", that's just silly.

i have all my civs masked just due to the fact people are so worried about what civ someone is using, the only time i check peoples civ names are when they say their civ didnt load, and i just look to make sure it didnt load

dont know about anyone else but i pick civs depending on whos on my team and whos on the other team, i have a civ that im already gonna use before the game even starts no matter what the other guys are doing, unless someone on my team is looking for a specific strat to use

hmm i remember a guy whose name was PELIE!! who told me that i should change my civ names immediately..cus they were like MiddleShWing and MiddleShPocket

My sword civ is 1 space, clubciv 2, ca civ 3, spearciv 4, grenciv 5, and so on...

Its tough to memorise it but meh I cant be bothered to change the names in tha tfolder thingy or something.

I used to have all my civ names in the form of lyrics... Like:
ThePaceIs2Fast - Swords
YouJustCantLast - CA
ForfeitTheGame - Clubs
CoverUpUrFace - Knights

That was when I started playing though 0o
