help to play online

Hello, i have the gameinstalled and have been playing against the pc for years. now i want to play online against others, i downloaded the patch. when i go to mulitplayer there seems to be no games i can join, so it asks if i want to host one, I tried and got to the point where somebody joined and went to a screen saying "connecting" but never connected. I just want to play on line if anybody could help me?
