Well, there are not too many bands on that list you would hear on MTV. Plus those were just 20 or so bands I like the most off the top of my head. In my Media Monkey archive I have over 17,000 songs from hundreds of bands.

Some categories above would include rock, punk, hardcore, industrial, rap, trip hop (portishead), noise rock, metal, alternative, psychedelic (wooden sjips), goth, adult contemporary, reggae (some bad brains)

Some others:

Psi-Com - goth
Banyan - jazz fusion
Beduin Soundclash - reggea, roots
Bauhaus
Beck
Blur
Boris - noise rock
The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Bumblebeez -beats
Butthole Surfers
Collide
The Crystal Method
Darryl Jennifer - reggea
Death From Above 1979
Deftones
The Duke Spirit
Elliot Smith -adult contemporary
Filter
Flaming Lips
The Gutter Twins
Gorillaz
Happy Monday's
The Icarus Line
Infectious Grooves
L7
Love and Rockets
Manu Chao -world
Market
MC 900 FT Jesus
Melt-Banana
Nine Inch Nails
Polkadot Cadaver
The Polyphonic Spree -soundscape
Pop Will Eat Itself
Queens of the Stone Age
Ramones
Revolting Cocks
Screaming Trees
Sleep
UNKLE
We Are Scientists
The Wesley Willis Fiasco

Some older bands I like

Jefferson Airplane
Led Zeppelin
Duke Ellington
Andy Williams
Blind Willy Johnson
Curtis Mayfield
Terry Reid
The B52's

Also I just started a music blog about little over a week ago. Only have about 10 posts so far but I think there is already a pretty wide variety of styles present.

don't know what the hell that wave shit is, but ac dc and zeppelin are definitely not metal. great to see an exodus cover band as the best new thrash metal king. why is iron butterfly the best? gadda davida?
where's the blues man? none of that exists without it

Blues bores me. I just decided to put some of the heavy metal bands of this generation in because some people are dumb enough to think that heavy metal is dead and I wanted to include a few names that people should look into. I'm not sure how you can call Metallica an Exodus cover band, they don't sound very similar and just because Gary Holt is a better guitarist doesn't mean they right better songs. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is a great album but they have many more then that also. And yes Led Zeppelin is metal.

"Blues bores me"

+1

Don't get me wrong, I like Blues in theory and appreciate what it is and it's history, but damned if I can listen to it for any length of time before moving on to something with a little more meat.

On another note, I used to listen to this Blues song called (or the main lyrics were) 'I've gone and got lucky... found me a birds nest on the ground'. Kind of liked it but don't remember who it was. Any ideas?

what?? bonded by blood is the name of exodus' debut album, and you happened to mention a band named that, maybe they are the cover band i was talking about? how is gary holt better? kirk taught him guitar, illogical. and no led zeppelin is not metal.
